Well, Simon and I have been dreaming/scheming/thinking about what to do in the next five years or so. First up was spending a year or two on Stewart Island working for DoC, then we thought about moving back to Auckland for a bit, then Canada was the next location, or perhaps England, or both. Option four is buying some land and building our own house! So, now I'm investigating all the options for building an "eco-house". Man, how I loath that term... it just doesn't sound sincere.
Simon is keen to go off-grid for our power, which I'm not too sure about just yet! But we also want to use passive solar heating, solar hot water, rainwater rather than town supply, on-site wastewater and/or grey water treatment (and greywater for the garden), sustainable materials (if possible and cheap enough), permaculture techniques and yeah, all kinds of things! My job now is to investigate and collate information for when we're ready to build. Oh, and I get to design the rooms, layout, storage and all kinds of cool things like that too.
Right, now to save some pennies and find a nice piece of land!
